Voter ID (INE card) from abroad: how to get it at your consulate

If you live in the U.S. and want to vote in 2027, you need the INE voter ID. You apply with an appointment at the consulate, it is free, and there is one step many people skip: confirming that it reached you.

We are a private service. The appointment is free at citas.sre.gob.mx and you can do the procedure yourself. If you prefer our support, we charge for our service.

In short

  • Registration to vote from abroad in 2027 runs from September 1, 2026 to February 25, 2027. The election is on June 6, 2027 (INE, Mexico’s National Electoral Institute, checked on September 21, 2026).
  • The voter ID (INE card) has no cost at the consulate, and the appointment at citas.sre.gob.mx is free.
  • You apply in person and with an appointment. It is not handed over that day: the INE sends it by courier in about 3 to 5 weeks.
  • When it arrives, you have to confirm receipt. Without that step it is not active for voting from abroad.

What is on the ballot in 2027 from abroad

The INE refers to 15 entidades federativas (Mexico’s states and Mexico City). According to Milenio (September 2, 2026), that includes 11 governorships, the migrant deputy seats of Mexico City, Guerrero, Jalisco and Oaxaca, and one proportional-representation deputy seat in the State of Mexico.

If your home state is not on the list, the voter ID still works as official Mexican identification.

How to book the appointment yourself

  1. Go to citas.sre.gob.mx (MiConsulado) and create your account with your email address.
  2. Choose your consulate and the voter ID procedure (credencial para votar).
  3. Look for an available day and confirm the appointment.

Appointments are personal: one per person. The appointment is free.

What to bring on the day of the appointment

The INE asks for, in general:

  • your Mexican birth certificate;
  • a photo ID;
  • proof of address abroad, because that is where the voter ID will be sent.

According to Conexión Migrante (March 19, 2026), since March 2026 the INE accepts as ID the consular ID card (matrícula consular) and passports that expired no more than 10 years ago. It is a press source: confirm the list at votoextranjero.mx before you go.

What tends to go wrong

  • Not confirming receipt. Many people don’t do it: in Veracruz, only 45% of those who requested the voter ID from abroad completed that confirmation, according to El Demócrata (June 8, 2026).
  • An incomplete address. If the courier cannot find you, the voter ID does not arrive.
  • Leaving it for February. The period closes on February 25, 2027, and delivery takes weeks.

If you prefer our support

  • A review of your documents before the appointment: birth certificate, photo ID and proof of address abroad, with your details written the same way on all of them.
  • Your appointment at your consulate, with your details exactly as they appear on your birth certificate.
  • Preparation: what to bring and what the appointment is like.
  • Follow-up: we remind you to confirm receipt when the voter ID arrives, which is the step that activates it. If the consulate cancels your appointment, we look for another one at no extra cost.

What you pay, and to whom:

  • The appointment: free at citas.sre.gob.mx.
  • The voter ID: free; the INE issues it.
  • Our service: our fee depends on the procedure and the case. Write to us and we will give you the cost for yours before we start.

What we do not do: we do not issue the voter ID, we do not go in your place and we cannot guarantee a date, because each consulate decides when appointments are available. The INE issues the voter ID with you there in person.

If you also need a passport or to register your children’s birth, see the guide to the Mexican passport in the U.S. and the one on dual nationality.
